BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#BIOMEDeviceBIOMEDevice Boston, the east coast’s premier event showcasing emerging technologies and trends from cutting-edge engineers, innovative thinkers, and business leaders who impact the progression of the multi-trillion-dollar biomedical market, revealed a renewal of a strategic partnership with MassMEDIC to once again hold an expert-led Master Class Start-Up Series intended to help companies grow and navigate the evolving medtech investment marketplace.

The updated and expanded program confirmed to debut at this year’s event, slated to be held from Sept. 28-29 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, is designed for early-stage companies seeking to expand their business and ventures in the medtech investment landscape. The pandemic fueled the introduction of new medtech and digital health start-ups, which brought significant investment from venture funds. Digital health startups in particular raised $29.1 billion, according to Rock Health, nearly doubling 2020’s former record-breaking funding of $14.9 billion.

The Master Class Start-Up Series is available to all BIOMEDevice Boston registered participants, delivering highly curated content geared toward imparting insights on navigating the ever-changing medtech investment landscape, what it takes to mature alongside these trends, and garnering an inside look at various funding vehicles – from strategics, to venture capital – and everything in between.

“Medtech and the biomedical markets are undergoing immense disruption as new and highly advanced technologies focus on prevention, wellness, diagnosis, and detection to address unmet needs more cost-efficiently,” said Adrienne Zepeda, Group Event Director of BIOMEDevice Boston. “As more and more startups enter this field to introduce new approaches and exciting innovations, there also is increased competition and the challenge of securing investments.”

Zepeda continued, “In response, we teamed up with MassMEDIC and designed a program to equip medtech business owners with actionable tips to approach capital and investments, from the pitch to debt financing. It’s also a terrific opportunity to network with like-minded innovators who have seen success in the medtech field and see what your peers have achieved.”

MassMEDIC brings its unparalleled expertise and experience to educating, connecting, creating awareness and advocating for the medical device ecosystem to this program. Comprising over 300 members representing manufacturers, product developers, suppliers, research institutions, and academic health centers, MassMEDIC helps the medtech community navigate today’s evolving healthcare ecosystem.

“We are pleased to once again work with BIOMEDevice Boston to present the updated and expanded Master Class Start-Up-Series at this year’s conference,” said Rachel Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of MassMEDIC and President of MassMEDIC’s IGNITE Accelerator Program. “With access to capital becoming less readily available, it is more important than ever for startups to have the information they need to be successful. Our program will not only provide attendees with this imperative information on market outlook and funding strategies, but it will connect them with those who can help to achieve their goals.”

Master Class Start-Up Series agenda:

Wednesday, September 28

  • State of Medtech Investments (11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

The last few years saw a tremendous influx in available capital and investments into medtech start-ups. As the market corrects and investments become more competitive, what does this mean for available capital? This session will examine today’s shifting fundraising marketplace with an eye for trends to be aware of and how best to prepare for the year ahead.

  • The State of M&A – Partnering with Strategics (12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
This lunch and learn session will dive into the impact of the way larger medtech companies think about capital allocation to M&A and licensing as the market corrects. Do short-term dynamics matter in these initiatives? This session will feature the heads of M&A from leading industry OEMs who will discuss their companies’ perspectives on investments today and in the next 18 months.
  • Fundraising: Planning Your Attack (2:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
The finance industry is growing in dynamism. As such, vehicles and players that are sometimes less prominently advertised may be attractive avenues for companies in various circumstances. In this session, we’ll discuss debt financing, family offices, and online investment platforms, and the pros and cons of each.
  • Fundraising: Raising with VCs (3:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Venture capital financing is all about return on investment. In this session, we’ll hear from VCs who will share how they develop valuations and how today’s marketplace impacts what they do and how they do it. We’ll also dive into the differences between independent financial VCs and those who sit in-house at strategics to understand what each may be looking for to better prepare you to create the right profile for your next pitch.
